Watch Description
The Omega Speedmaster Mark II debuted in 1969 as a counterpart to the Speedmaster Moonwatch. Designed with a tonneau-shaped case and utilizing the Caliber 861 movement, the MKII was based on a prototype designed for NASA engineers who requested a model that could withstand the extreme heat and cold environments on the moon. Known as the Alaska project, NASA eventually decided to continue with the Speedmaster Professional, and the Alaska project was put to rest.
The History: The Speedmaster was introduced in 1957 as a sport and racing chronograph, complementing Omega’s position as the official timekeeper for the Olympic Games. Its iconic place in history stems from its utilization by NASA for the Gemini Titan III crews and eventually by the astronauts on the Apollo 11 mission, which made it the first watch to be worn on the moon.
The Watch: The Omega Speedmaster Mark II Ref 145.014 features a 42mm tonneau-shaped stainless steel case with a flat mineral crystal. The tachymeter scale sits underneath the crystal at the outer edge of the dial. The matte black dial features the same classic Speedmaster professional layout, with the addition of “Mark II” on the text. Powered by the manual wind Caliber 861 movement, the Mark II has a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

# Omega Speedmaster Mark II 145.014 Review by A.I. WatchMetrics
## Watch Summary
The Omega Speedmaster Mark II ref. 145.014 is a vintage 1970s chronograph blending sports watch toughness with collector appeal, featuring its signature hooded lugs, stepped black dial, fixed tachymeter bezel, and the legendary manual-wind Caliber 861 movement with a 48-hour power reserve, ideal for enthusiasts chasing Moonwatch lineage without the premium of first-generation models.
## Overall Watch Rating: 8.6/10.0
**Dials & Design Metric (9.4/10.0)** - The Mark II's distinctive hooded lugs and multi-level dial deliver timeless Speedmaster charisma refined for the 1970s, outshining standard divers like the Submariner in vintage flair.
**History & Innovation Metric (9.3/10.0)** - Rooted in the NASA-qualified Moonwatch family, this model's evolution of the Cal. 861 chronograph cements Omega's pivotal role in space exploration history, rivaling Patek's complication milestones.
**Movement Metric (9.2/10.0)** - The robust Caliber 861 offers chronograph reliability and hand-finished bridges worthy of high-end vintages, performing on par with early Rolex 6263 Valjoux evolutions.
**Brand Metric (8.8/10.0)** - Omega's luxury prestige, bolstered by decades of Speedmaster innovation and global acclaim, aligns it closely with Rolex in heritage-driven excellence.
**Versatility Metric (8.7/10.0)** - From desk to track day, its 42mm steel case and legible dial adapt seamlessly across casual, sports, and adventure scenarios, much like a modern Tudor Black Bay.
**Cohesiveness Metric (8.6/10.0)** - As a standalone icon, it embodies Omega's chronograph ethos with unwavering stylistic and mechanical harmony, akin to a singular A. Lange piece.
**Rarity Metric (8.4/10.0)** - Limited 1971-1974 production and strong secondary demand around $15,000 elevate it beyond common Seikos, though not as elusive as a ref. 145.012 Moonwatch.
**Complications Metric (8.2/10.0)** - The flyback-capable 12-hour chronograph with three subdials provides sophisticated timing utility, comparable to Zenith El Primero basics but with space-proven grit.
**Material Metric (7.9/10.0)** - Stainless steel construction shines, but hesalite crystal and period aluminum bezel temper scores against sapphire-equipped modern Omegas like the 3861 Speedmaster.
**Functions Metric (7.5/10.0)** - Core timekeeping plus chronograph delivers essential utility, solid for a vintage tool watch but trailing multifunction GMTs like the Rolex GMT-Master.
## Total Performance Score (TPS): 8.1
## WM Collector Grade: A
## Performance Insights: Excels in history, design, and movement for vintage enthusiasts, with hesalite and basic functions as minor drags, offering strong value at $15,000 secondary versus an implied $18,200.
## TPS Interpretation: Strong Value: This vintage gem overdelivers on heritage and chronograph prowess relative to its market price, appealing to collectors seeking authenticated space-era performance.
