Thanks to its utilitarian, functional design and numerous special editions, it has also achieved the status of a cultural icon whose appeal extends far beyond the watchmaking industry. This variant is the first Big Pilot's Watch with a dark green dial. The striking hue is inspired by the "racing green" used to paint British racing cars since 1903. The oversized conical crown harks back to a historic observation watch from the 1940s – it could be operated by pilots even while wearing the padded gloves of their flight suits. Inside the 46-millimetre stainless steel case, the IWC-manufactured 52110 calibre is at work. This highly precise and robustly built automatic movement features a Pellaton winding system that uses every small movement of the rotor in both directions. It builds up a power reserve of seven days in two barrels. The display at 3 o’clock informs the wearer how much power remains. A soft-iron inner case effectively shields the movement from the effects of magnetic fields, and the front glass is specially secured against a sudden drop in pressure.
