A handsome and wonderfully executed creation by IWC, this dress watch is beautiful both inside and out.

THE FULL STORY

When IWC is thought of today, it is typically associated with aviation watches that are designed with a utilitarian ruggedness in mind, such as the iconic Big Pilot. On the other side of the spectrum, however, the brand has also been known for its more elegant and sophisticated creations.

For a mid-century design, this 36.5mm dress watch would certainly have been considered a bold choice during its decade of production. Especially with the flared lugs, which help create the illusion of larger proportions beyond its actual measurement. The soft but rich intensity of the vintage 18k rose gold case helps enhance the watch's overall wrist presence.

The silvered dial is simple. The combination of the gold Arabic numerals, the baton markers, the dotted minute track, and the sharp Alpha-like hands are all perfectly placed, as to not take away from the overall clean aesthetic. And let's not forget the company's signature in script on the dial, which is a subtle yet powerful reminder of the brand's history. The movement inside is the legendary caliber 89, famously known for its concisely designed movement, which is a true workhorse. As a tribute to this highly respected movement, IWC dress watches from this era are affectionately referred to as "Caliber 89" models by vintage collectors.
