Watch Description

Cartier Santos Carrée History:
The Cartier Santos dates back to 1904, when Louis Cartier created a watch for his good friend, a Brazilian aviator by the name of Alberto Santos-Dumont. The Santos was only ever executed in precious metal and on a leather strap until 1978, when the market had already shifted to steel sports watches such as the Nautilus, Royal Oak, and other sports Rolex. Cartier had a real problem growing within their watch department, as precious metal watches were much more expensive than what was already on the market. Their marketing manager, Dominique Perrin, came up with the idea of using the Santos to launch a new affordable sports watch appealing to many audiences. It was the first time Cartier used steel in any watch and was considered sacrilegious considering they are a jeweller. The watch was also one of the few on the market using two-tone, a mix of steel and gold. Over time, the design language has stayed the same with the Santos, with the Carrée being its birthplace.

# Cartier Santos Carree Two Tone Review by A.I. WatchMetrics

## Watch Summary
The Cartier Santos Carree Two-Tone is an iconic square dress watch blending stainless steel and 18k yellow gold in a compact 29mm case with signature visible bezel screws, an opaline silvered dial featuring black Roman numerals, blued hands, central seconds, and a date at 6 o'clock, powered by a slim quartz movement for precise timekeeping; ideal for the urbane professional seeking vintage-inspired luxury that's understated yet statement-making.

## Overall Watch Rating: 6.8/10.0

**Dials & Design Metric (9.5/10.0)** - The Art Deco square case with functional screws, opaline dial, and crisp Roman numerals exemplifies timeless elegance on par with Cartier's Tank or Patek Philippe Calatrava.

**Material Metric (9.4/10.0)** - Two-tone steel and yellow gold construction paired with sapphire crystal and meticulous polishing rivals the premium finishing of modern Omega dress watches.

**History & Innovation Metric (9.3/10.0)** - Evolving from the 1904 Santos pilot's watch—the first wristwatch for aviation—the Carree's 1980s square redesign cements Cartier's pivotal role in horological history.

**Brand Metric (8.8/10.0)** - Cartier's jewelry heritage and global prestige align it with top luxury marques like Rolex, delivering consistent high-end appeal.

**Versatility Metric (7.8/10.0)** - Its refined two-tone aesthetic and wearable 29mm size suit formal boardrooms or smart casual outings, akin to a versatile TAG Heuer Carrera dress variant.

**Rarity Metric (6.7/10.0)** - Secondary market pricing around $5,200 affords moderate scarcity comparable to discontinued Tudor classics with steady collector interest.

**Movement Metric (5.7/10.0)** - The quartz caliber 057 MC offers reliable accuracy and thin profile but falls short of the mechanical refinement in peers like ETA-powered Hamiltons.

**Complications Metric (3.9/10.0)** - A straightforward date window provides utility but lacks the complexity of chronographs in comparably priced Longines models.

**Functions Metric (0.5/10.0)** - Basic timekeeping with date delivers essentials but underwhelms versus multifunction tool watches at this price tier.

## Total Performance Score (TPS): 4.0

## WM Collector Grade: C

## Performance Insights: Exceptional design, materials, and heritage elevate it, while quartz movement and sparse functions limit technical appeal; strong value trading below its $10,000 implied price.

## TPS Interpretation: Average Value: The watch punches above its technical weight in style and build but expects more features for the luxury positioning.
