Watch Description

The Cartier Tank Normale is the original Tank design brought to us by Louis Cartier in 1917 and made commercially available in 1919. The Normale design was inspired by the Renault FT-17 tank used by the French Military in the First World War, which the watch resembles very closely. The Tank Normale started what has become one of the most celebrated watch designs of all time, and has evolved into the many variations that make up the Cartier brand today.

The Cartier Tank is the perfect example of excellent design transcending generations. The Tank moved through the early 20th century only to become more relevant during the mid-century design era, and is once again seeing a massive resurgence amongst the watch-collecting community today.

A.I. Watch Review:

# Cartier Tank Normale 18k Review by A.I. WatchMetrics

## Watch Summary
The Cartier Tank Normale 18k is a quintessential Art Deco rectangular dress watch crafted in 18k yellow gold, featuring a minimalist silvered dial with Roman numerals and blued feuille hands powered by the manual-winding Calibre 8970 MC movement offering 38 hours of power reserve, ideal for the sophisticated collector or formal wearer seeking timeless elegance and historical prestige over sporty functionality.

## Overall Watch Rating: 7.9/10.0

**Dials & Design Metric (9.8/10.0)** - The iconic Tank design with its clean Roman numerals and proportional rectangular case sets a benchmark for dress watch aesthetics, rivaling the best of Patek Philippe's Calatrava in enduring style.

**History & Innovation Metric (9.4/10.0)** - Since its 1917 debut inspired by WWI tanks, the Tank line has defined luxury dress watches, earning top marks comparable to Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak for cultural impact.

**Brand Metric (8.8/10.0)** - Cartier's century-plus heritage in high jewelry and watchmaking places it firmly in the luxury elite alongside Vacheron Constantin, with exceptional prestige for refined connoisseurs.

**Material Metric (9.6/10.0)** - Solid 18k yellow gold construction with sapphire crystal and meticulous polishing delivers near-perfect material quality, on par with top Jaeger-LeCoultre pieces.

**Rarity Metric (8.2/10.0)** - At around $15,000 retail, its limited production relative to Cartier's broader lineup offers solid exclusivity, similar to a mid-tier Omega Speedmaster variant.

**Movement Metric (8.2/10.0)** - The in-house manual Calibre 8970 MC provides reliable high-end finishing and accuracy, benchmarking well against ETA-based luxury manuals but without tourbillon complexity.

**Versatility Metric (6.5/10.0)** - Primarily a formal dress watch with 30m water resistance, it excels in black-tie settings but lags behind multi-purpose icons like the Rolex Datejust for everyday wear.

**Functions Metric (4.8/10.0)** - Basic time-only functionality keeps it simple and elegant, scoring averagely like most classic dress watches from Blancpain or Breguet.

**Complications Metric (1.5/10.0)** - Lacking any additional features beyond hours and minutes, it trails far behind complication-heavy pieces like IWC Portugiesers.

## Total Performance Score (TPS): 9.3

## WM Collector Grade: A+

## Performance Insights: Exceptional strengths in design, history, brand prestige, materials shine for collectors, while low complications and versatility temper broad appeal, offering strong value under its implied $12,800 price point.

## TPS Interpretation: Exceptional Value: This watch vastly overdelivers on heritage and artistry relative to its price, making it a collector's standout.
