Watch Description

Today, Movado is probably best known for producing accessibly-priced fashion watches such as the always-popular Museum Watch collection. But from the 1930s through the 1960s Movado was producing tough, purpose-driven watches that stood their ground with the best-known professional grade wrist instrumentation of the times.

Movado released water-resistant wristwatches as early as 1935, and by the 1960s was producing dive watches to compete with the era's better known offerings from brands such as Rolex or Omega. The most desirable of these fall into the Super Sub Sea family, and the most elusive and sought-after of these is that unusual hybrid, the chronodiver--or the Super Sub Sea Chronograph.

Dating to circa the 1960s, this Super Sub Sea Chronograph is a relative rarity. It features a 40mm stainless steel case with a matte black Tritium reverse-panda dial, a rotating timing bezel with a lovely, light ghosting, and a manual winding Calibre 146HP, developed by the Swiss èbauche manufacturer Martel.

This Super Sub Sea is certainly a stunner with bevels as sharp as a dive knife and a prominent rotating bezel with light ghosting throughout.  While you won't likely be taking it diving with you, this is a beautiful historic piece with a legitimate aquatic heritage that sets it apart from the typical desk diver!

# Movado Super Sub Sea Chronograph A3736 Review by A.I. WatchMetrics

## Watch Summary
The Movado Super Sub Sea Chronograph A3736 is a rugged vintage diver-style chronograph from the late 1970s, boasting an iconic angular cushion case design, black dial with luminous markers and three subdials, targeted at collectors and enthusiasts seeking affordable retro tool watches with 200m water resistance and powered by the workhorse Valjoux 7734 automatic movement offering around 42 hours of power reserve.

## Overall Watch Rating: 7.6/10.0

**Complications Metric (8.7/10.0)** - The robust chronograph with date complication rivals entry-level Heuer Autavias in functionality without excessive complexity.
**Dials & Design Metric (8.7/10.0)** - Its bold cushion shape and legible black dial with tritium lume deliver standout vintage appeal, comparable to cult-favorite Seiko 6105 "Captain Willard" divers.
**Versatility Metric (8.2/10.0)** - Excellent as a beater diver for sports, adventure, or casual wear, much like a modern Tudor Black Bay but with retro charm.
**Brand Metric (7.8/10.0)** - Movado provides reliable Swiss entry-level luxury craftsmanship, on par with Oris or Tag Heuer's sportier accessible models.
**Movement Metric (7.8/10.0)** - The Valjoux 7734 automatic chronograph offers solid reliability and historical cred, similar to those in period Omega or Breitling chronos.
**Material Metric (7.5/10.0)** - Stainless steel construction with plexiglass crystal holds up well for a vintage tool watch, akin to Sinn's durable dive cases minus modern sapphire upgrades.
**Rarity Metric (6.1/10.0)** - Moderately scarce as a discontinued 1970s piece on the secondary market, less ubiquitous than common Rolex Submariners but more available than microbrand limited runs.
**Functions Metric (7.3/10.0)** - Core timekeeping plus chronograph and date provide practical utility, matching mid-tier Seiko Prospex chronodivers.
**History & Innovation Metric (6.0/10.0)** - Draws on Movado's long Swiss heritage but lacks groundbreaking innovation here, on par with established but unflashy 1970s divers from Glycine or Doxa.

## Total Performance Score (TPS): 4.2

## WM Collector Grade: B-

## Performance Insights: Excels in complications, design, and versatility for a vintage chronodiver, though history and functions are average; exceptional value at secondary prices far below its $66,000 implied worth.

## TPS Interpretation: Solid Value: This vintage gem punches above its weight in mechanical prowess and style for budget-conscious collectors.
