ROLEX CELLINI MODEL HISTORY

The Rolex Cellini collection takes its name from the Italian Renaissance sculptor, Benvenuto Cellini, and pays tribute to traditional watch design, while simultaneously embracing modern watch-making techniques. The collection includes some of the manufacturer's best examples of luxury dress watches.

Although it is not widely recognised as one of the major Rolex collections, the Cellini line has a rich history, which dates back to the pre-World War II era. In this article, we take a look at some of the most important models in the Cellini family, in order to build a more complete picture of the collection's history.

THE FIRST ROLEX CELLINI: PRINCE

The first ever Cellini model was the Rolex Prince, which was initially released all the way back in 1928. That particular model attracted a lot of attention for its avant garde style and distinctive rectangular case, and it remained a popular timepiece throughout both the 1930s and 1940s, before production ceased in the 1950s.

In 2005, the manufacturer re-launched the Rolex Prince as part of the updated Cellini collection, paying particular attention to the model's authenticity as a traditional watch. It is powered by a manual wind calibre 7040 movement and is available in a choice of 18k yellow gold, white gold or rose gold.

ROLEX CELLINI TIME WATCH

Released in 2014, the Cellini Time is a classic luxury dress watch, with the emphasis being placed on pure time-keeping function. It is a simplistic, round-shaped timepiece, with central hours, minutes and seconds hands and Roman numerals marking the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock positions.

The watch is available with a choice of white gold or rose gold case materials, while the case itself measures 39mm in diameter. The model comes with either a black alligator or brown alligator leather strap and wearers also have the option of either a white or black dial. The Cellini Time offers water resistance for 50 metres.

POPULAR CELLINI MODEL LINES

Aside from the two collections mentioned, the Cellini family also includes a number of other models, such as the Cellini Date and the Cellini Dual Time - both of which were released in 2014, alongside the standard Cellini Time model. The former has a date display function, while the latter displays two time zones simultaneously.

# Rolex Cellini Date White Gold Review by A.I. WatchMetrics

## Watch Summary
The Rolex Cellini Date White Gold is an elegant dress watch characterized by its polished 39mm 18 ct white gold case with a supple domed bezel, a refined black lacquer dial featuring applied gold Roman numerals, slender dauphine hands, and a clean date window at 3 o'clock. Tailored for the sophisticated professional or collector seeking discreet luxury and Rolex pedigree without the sporty flair of Oyster models, it stands out with its classic proportions and exceptional finishing. It houses the reliable in-house automatic Calibre 3195 offering a 48-hour power reserve.

## Overall Watch Rating: 8.2/10.0

**Movement Metric (9.9/10.0)** - Rolex's Calibre 3195 automatic sets a benchmark for precision and durability, matching the elite performance of Grand Seiko's mechanicals.
**Material Metric (9.6/10.0)** - The 18k white gold case paired with sapphire crystal and meticulous polishing rivals the opulence of Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak in material execution.
**Brand Metric (9.2/10.0)** - Rolex's storied prestige and quality control earn top marks, comparable to the heritage strength of Omega or IWC.
**Dials & Design Metric (9.2/10.0)** - The lacquered black dial with Roman numerals delivers timeless sophistication akin to a Cartier Santos dress variant.
**History & Innovation Metric (8.7/10.0)** - Backed by Rolex's century of innovation and the Cellini line's 50+ years, it holds strong against established names like Jaeger-LeCoultre.
**Rarity Metric (8.4/10.0)** - Its $18,000 price and relatively low production in the Cellini lineup provide scarcity on par with limited Tudor models.
**Versatility Metric (7.5/10.0)** - Suited for formal and business wear but hampered by 50m WR and leather strap, similar to a standard Nomos Tangente.
**Complications Metric (6.3/10.0)** - The simple yet reliable date adds utility like in a basic Patek Calatrava, without advanced features.
**Functions Metric (4.7/10.0)** - Time plus date covers essentials adequately but lags behind multi-functional peers like a standard GMT.

## Total Performance Score (TPS): 4.0

## WM Collector Grade: C

## Performance Insights: Excels in movement, materials, and brand equity while falling short on functions and versatility, delivering fair value underpinned by Rolex prestige versus its implied higher-end positioning.

## TPS Interpretation: Average Value: The watch offers solid luxury construction and reliability befitting its brand but limited complications and everyday utility at this price point.
