Watch Description

James Bond (Roger Moore) wears a Seiko Quartz Chronograph watch in A View To A Kill (1985). The watch can be briefly spotted in the pre-title sequence when Bond is getting comfortable in the submarine after the intense ski chase.

UPDATE 2023: It was long thought to be a 7A28-7020 Quartz Chronograph, but the watch might actually be a 7A38-7060 Quartz Chronograph with Date window, as discovered by @rexworthywatches. This article will be updated soon with more details.

In a small continuity error, Bond actually seems to wear a completely different watch during the ski chase, seen only briefly and partly when he digs up the body of 003. That watch is a black with rubber band and some metal, it could very well be the Seiko H558-5000 that he wears later in the film.

It looks like Bond is also wearing the watch in the final San Francisco scenes, best spotted when he carries Stacey Sutton (Tanya Roberts) from the fire ladder and when he drives the fire truck.

The Seiko 7A28-7020 and 7A38-7060 have a white dial, three subdials and steel case and steel bracelet.

Bond wears quite a special watch. The 7A28 movement was the first analog quartz chronograph (all quartz chronographs were digital up to that point). Note that there are more Seiko watches that feature that movement. This silver/white 7A28-7020 / 7A38-7060 model is much harder to find than the black or gold versions.

In the end credits, "Seiko Time (UK) Ltd" is mentioned as a partner.

A.I. Watch Review:

# Seiko 7A28-7020 James Bond Quartz Chronograph Review by A.I. WatchMetrics

## Watch Summary
The Seiko 7A28-7020 is a vintage 1979 quartz chronograph with cinematic fame from James Bond's Moonraker, boasting a distinctive cushion-shaped stainless steel case, black reverse panda dial with three white subdials for small seconds, 60-minute counter, and 1/5-second disc, a rotating tachymeter bezel, and the ultra-reliable Caliber 7A28 quartz movement offering about 36 months of power reserve on a battery; ideal for vintage enthusiasts, Bond collectors, and fans of bold 1970s sports watch design seeking precise timing in a rugged 100m water-resistant package.

## Overall Watch Rating: 7.6/10.0

**Movement Metric (9.2/10.0)** - The 7A28 quartz chronograph delivers exceptional accuracy and speed with its high-frequency operation, surpassing many entry-level mechanical movements like the ETA 7750 in reliability.
**Dials & Design Metric (9.0/10.0)** - Its iconic reverse panda layout and angular cushion case capture quintessential 1970s flair better than most modern retro chronographs from microbrands.
**History & Innovation Metric (8.4/10.0)** - Quartz chronograph pioneering and James Bond Moonraker legacy elevate it to the level of culturally significant Seikos like the 62MAS diver.
**Complications Metric (8.6/10.0)** - The flyback-style chronograph with precise 1/5-second timing performs on par with higher-end analog chronos from the quartz era.
**Material Metric (8.1/10.0)** - Robust stainless steel construction and durable Hardlex crystal match the toughness of contemporary Seiko Prospex field watches.
**Versatility Metric (8.0/10.0)** - Equally at home in casual, sports, or collector settings, it rivals the adaptability of a modern Seiko Speedtimer.
**Functions Metric (7.5/10.0)** - Core timekeeping, date, and full chronograph suite provide solid utility comparable to a basic automatic chronograph.
**Brand Metric (5.2/10.0)** - Seiko's mid-tier reliability shines like Hamilton or Citizen, though it lacks the prestige of entry-luxury brands.
**Rarity Metric (4.8/10.0)** - Vintage production and Bond association offer moderate scarcity similar to other 1970s Seiko references on the secondary market.

## Total Performance Score (TPS): 4.7

## WM Collector Grade: B

## Performance Insights: Excels in movement precision, design appeal, and historical significance while brand prestige and rarity lag, delivering strong value from quartz excellence at vintage secondary prices around $900.

## TPS Interpretation: Good Value: The watch's superior accuracy, complications, and cultural icon status outperform price-expected performance for reliable vintage chronograph fun.
