The Seiko Monster SKX779 first hit catalogs in 2000 and was made until 2012. With its bold stainless external unidirectional dive bezel, this was a very different alternative to the far more traditional SKX00x lineup. Like the Tuna models, the Seiko Monster SKX779 employs short lugs. With a diameter of 42mm, the lug-to-lug comes in at a very wearable 48mm. And in contrast to a lot of other Seiko divers from the same period with their 22mm lugs, the Monster has a 20mm lug width. That’s a great thing because Monsters look good on all kinds of straps.

A.I. Watch Review:
# Seiko Black Monster SKX779 Review by A.I. WatchMetrics
## Watch Summary
The Seiko Black Monster SKX779 is an iconic tool dive watch from the Prospex Monster series, featuring a striking black dial with oversized luminous indices, a unique inner rotating timing flange beneath the chapter ring, and a robust unidirectional bezel, targeted at dive enthusiasts and everyday adventurers seeking a bold, legible, and durable Japanese automatic diver powered by the reliable Caliber 7S26 with approximately 41 hours of power reserve.
## Overall Watch Rating: 6.6/10.0
**Dials & Design Metric (8.9/10.0)** - The bold, oversized lume plots and distinctive Monster aesthetic deliver exceptional legibility and character comparable to cult-favorite divers like the Rolex Submariner on a budget.
**Versatility Metric (8.4/10.0)** - This rugged diver transitions seamlessly from underwater adventures to casual wear, outperforming many single-purpose tools in everyday adaptability.
**Material Metric (8.6/10.0)** - Solid stainless steel construction with brushed finishing and durable Hardlex crystal holds up well against marine environments, on par with entry-level luxury divers.
**History & Innovation Metric (8.0/10.0)** - Seiko's pioneering role in affordable mechanical divers gives it strong heritage, akin to the impact of the original SKX007 lineup.
**Movement Metric (6.9/10.0)** - The workhorse 7S26 automatic offers dependable performance without hacking or hand-winding, matching the reliability of other mid-tier Japanese automatics.
**Functions Metric (6.2/10.0)** - Core timekeeping plus dive bezel provides solid utility for its class, similar to classic Seiko turtles.
**Brand Metric (5.4/10.0)** - Seiko's mid-tier status as a volume producer of quality tools earns respect among enthusiasts, like Citizen or Orient.
**Rarity Metric (3.2/10.0)** - Discontinued status boosts secondary appeal slightly, but high production keeps it common compared to limited microbrand divers.
**Complications Metric (3.8/10.0)** - Basic dive timing via bezel offers minimal complexity, adequate for tool watches but trailing multifunction rivals.
## Total Performance Score (TPS): 6.2
## WM Collector Grade: B
## Performance Insights: Excels in design, materials, and versatility for a compelling tool watch, though movement and rarity lag, delivering strong value well below its implied price.
## TPS Interpretation: Good Value: The watch overdelivers on iconic design and durability relative to its accessible price point.
