Watch Description

The 6139 was in space for 84 days!

If you’re not aware of how the Seiko 6139 Pogue obtained its nickname, it’s a great story. NASA selected USAF pilot Colonel William Pogue in 1966 as one of the original astronauts for the Apollo Program. He was actually chosen for the aborted Apollo 19 mission, but was then transferred to the Skylab program. And so it was in late 1973 into 1974 (the mission lasted over 84 days), that Colonel Pogue went into space as a part of Skylab 4.

Instead of Speedmasters

Interestingly, while Pogue was testing prior to the launch, he needed a chronograph due to the fact that Speedmasters were not issued until very close to the mission launches. Pogue ended up buying; you guessed it, a Seiko 6139 with a yellow dial and, thus, the nickname for this historic chronograph. Significantly, this was the first automatic chronograph in space and in case you were wondering, it performed flawlessly.

A.I. Watch Review:

# Seiko Pogue Chronograph (6139-6002) Review by A.I. WatchMetrics

## Watch Summary
The Seiko Pogue Chronograph (6139-6002) is an iconic vintage sports chronograph, celebrated as the first automatic chronograph worn in space by NASA astronaut Colonel William Pogue during the 1973 Skylab 4 mission, featuring a robust cushion-shaped stainless steel case, crisp white reverse-panda dial with three black subdials for constant seconds at 9 o'clock, 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters, fixed tachymeter bezel, and the pioneering Seiko Caliber 6139 automatic movement with vertical clutch and column-wheel actuation delivering approximately 42 hours of power reserve, ideal for collectors and enthusiasts who value historical milestones and mechanical ingenuity in a wearable 40mm package.

## Overall Watch Rating: 7.8/10.0

**Movement Metric (9.9/10.0)** - The Caliber 6139's vertical clutch and column-wheel chronograph mechanism was ahead of its time, matching the sophistication of elite 1969 rivals like the Zenith El Primero.
**History & Innovation Metric (9.4/10.0)** - Its flight on Skylab 4 cemented Seiko's legacy as a space pioneer, outshining many modern homages in cultural impact.
**Dials & Design Metric (9.2/10.0)** - The cushion case and reverse-panda layout deliver timeless appeal comparable to top vintage Heuer chronographs.
**Material Metric (8.2/10.0)** - Stainless steel construction with Hardlex crystal offers solid durability akin to period-correct tool watches, though modern sapphire would elevate it further.
**Complications Metric (8.0/10.0)** - The fully functional flyback-capable chronograph performs reliably, on par with entry luxury standards.
**Versatility Metric (7.5/10.0)** - Suited for casual and sports wear with bracelet or strap swaps, it bridges vintage style and everyday robustness like a Hamilton Intra-Matic.
**Functions Metric (7.0/10.0)** - Core timekeeping plus triple-register chronograph provides essential utility matching mid-tier sports watches.
**Rarity Metric (6.1/10.0)** - Secondary market scarcity for well-preserved examples boosts desirability, though not as elusive as limited-edition pilots.
**Brand Metric (5.2/10.0)** - Seiko's mid-tier reliability shines here, elevated slightly by enthusiast cult status but trailing luxury houses like Omega.

## Total Performance Score (TPS): 9.9

## WM Collector Grade: A+

## Performance Insights: Exceptional strengths in movement, history, and design make this a standout vintage performer, with solid value punching above its mid-tier brand positioning and secondary prices around $2,500.

## TPS Interpretation: Exceptional Value: The Pogue delivers groundbreaking space-era innovation and build quality that vastly exceeds price-expected performance, ideal for savvy collectors.
