Heuer launched a range of divers watches in 1979 which became the mainstay of the Heuer product range up to the time TAG Group acquired Heuer in the mid 1980's. There was always equal emphasis on product for both genders which was another first for Heuer. The company embraced the quartz movement from the start and the vast majority of variations were supplied with these battery operated movements. These fashionable tool watches were a commercial success and were finally replaced in 1992/1993, well into the TAG Heuer era.
The first example of the Heuer divers watch were in fact manufactured in France by G Monnin and included a men's (42mm) and woman's (28mm) in both quartz and automatic. There were dial, hands and bezel changes as production moved to Switzerland but the basic case shape, which distinguishes the Heuer diver, was born in France and continued throughout its existence to eventually become know as the 1000 Series. In time Heuer added the Deep Dive (reference 980.023) and Super Professionals both serious tool watches with 1000m depth ratings, as well as some low cost models (mainly for women).
