Watch Description
The Defy had one design brief: to achieve a higher standard of durability than any other Swiss watch at the time. It was achieved through a series of technical improvements, including 300 meters of water resistance, the adoption of a tougher mineral crystal and a shock proof case. The Defy had a unique suspension system, in which the movement was surrounded by a shock-absorbing band to provide unprecedented impact protection. Zenith employees would test the shock resistance of the first defy prototypes by tossing them out of a second-story window onto the concrete below. The Defy was the number one watch for the person who wanted to live with a watch on an everyday basis. The robust nature of the watch resonated with many watch wearers, with Italian collectors calling it Il casaforte del temp “The safe of time”, with French collectors calling it the coffre-fort, or “Bank vault”.The 1969 debut of the Defy predated the luxury sport watch by several years. This can be seen in its more utilitarian ideals. It was a rugged watch, built to tackle life. The 1970s sports era of the Royal Oak and Nautilus moved beyond this simple idea.

A.I. Watch Review:
# Zenith Defy Automatic Vintage Review by A.I. WatchMetrics
## Watch Summary
The Zenith Defy Automatic Vintage is a luxury sports watch blending 1970s-inspired tonneau case design with modern finishing and an integrated stainless steel bracelet, featuring a textured sunray dial, applied indices, luminous dauphine hands, and a date window at 3 o'clock, targeting enthusiasts seeking understated Zenith prestige for daily casual or office wear; it houses the reliable in-house Elite 670 automatic movement with a 50-hour power reserve.
## Overall Watch Rating: 7.5/10.0
**History & Innovation Metric (9.3/10.0)** - Zenith's revolutionary El Primero legacy and in-house Elite caliber push this beyond typical luxury peers like Omega.
**Material Metric (9.0/10.0)** - Brushed and polished stainless steel paired with AR-coated sapphire delivers build quality on par with Rolex Oyster cases.
**Dials & Design Metric (8.8/10.0)** - The distinctive cushion profile and elegant dial layout outshine generic round designs from brands like Tag Heuer.
**Brand Metric (8.6/10.0)** - Zenith's prestigious Swiss heritage earns marks comparable to Grand Seiko but shy of A. Lange & Söhne exclusivity.
**Versatility Metric (8.2/10.0)** - Transitions seamlessly from desk to weekend outings, surpassing rigid tool watches like Sinn divers.
**Movement Metric (7.8/10.0)** - The Elite 670 offers dependable accuracy and finishing similar to upgraded Sellita movements in premium independents.
**Rarity Metric (6.6/10.0)** - Its discontinued run provides moderate scarcity, less than microbrand one-offs but more than current-production Tudors.
**Functions Metric (5.0/10.0)** - Time-plus-date delivers everyday utility on level with entry-luxury like Oris divers.
**Complications Metric (4.0/10.0)** - A lone date falls short of multifunction rivals like the Breitling Navitimer.
## Total Performance Score (TPS): 4.0
## WM Collector Grade: C
## Performance Insights: Excels in heritage, materials, design, and brand cachet while versatility holds strong, but modest functions and complications limit bang-for-buck versus its $5,500 secondary price.
## TPS Interpretation: Modest Value: The watch offers solid luxury appeal and Zenith pedigree but basic specs make it a cautious buy at current pricing.
