Watch Description

The Zenith El Primero debuted in 1969 as one of the world's first automatic chronographs. Zenith featured the new movement in a number of different case shapes at launch, but there is nothing quite like the model we have here. This reference came a few years after the El Primero was released in the early/mid 1970s, and it would be produced until around the end of that decade. Collectors today refer to this model as the "TV" or "Big Blue" due to its squarish-tonneau case shape that resembled a television set and the distinct blue colored dial.

This watch features a large stainless-steel case with a beautiful blue dial that has a tachymeter scale around its periphery, adding some nice depth. The bezel is polished, so that contrasts nicely with the brushed case and bracelet. The dial has three sub-dials with "TV" shaped silver rings that accentuate the case design. The watch also has an integrated stainless steel bracelet that starts at 31mm wide at the lugs and tapers to 16mm at the clasp, adding a nice level of comfort on the wrist. Zenith used two different bracelets for this model. The earlier examples, like we have here, had a thicker, heavy style of bracelet, but eventually Zenith switched to a lighter one made by Novavit SA (NSA). The story goes that the initial bracelets Zenith used for this model were made by Châtelain. The company went out of business in the middle of this model's production, so Zenith switched to bracelets made by NSA. The bracelet is dual signed at the clasp with both the Zenith and Châtelain logos.

The chronograph pusher is also interesting on this model. When viewing from behind, you'll notice there is a single piece of steel that functions like a lever when engaging with the pushers. This innovation was supposed to allow for easier use of the pushers, especially compared to a traditional design. It adds to the watch's unique vintage style.

A.I. Watch Review:

# Zenith El Primero “Big Blue” Review by A.I. WatchMetrics

## Watch Summary
The Zenith El Primero “Big Blue,” officially the Chronomaster Sport Boutique Edition, is a bold luxury sports chronograph with an all-blue aesthetic featuring a titanium case, lacquered blue ceramic tachymeter bezel, and shimmering sunray blue dial accented by rhodium-plated hands and indices, powered by the iconic high-beat El Primero 3600 automatic movement offering 60-hour power reserve and 1/10th-second chronograph precision, perfect for the discerning enthusiast who values heritage performance in a modern, eye-catching package.

## Overall Watch Rating: 9.1/10.0

**Movement Metric (9.7/10.0)** - The El Primero 3600 automatic chronograph with 36,000 vph high-beat rate and silicon escapement delivers elite performance on par with top-tier Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet references.
**Cohesiveness Metric (9.5/10.0)** - The unified all-blue theme from bezel to strap creates a strikingly harmonious design that stands out in Zenith's lineup like a signature Richard Mille colorway.
**History & Innovation Metric (9.3/10.0)** - Rooted in the groundbreaking 1969 El Primero—the world's first automatic chronograph—it continues to innovate with modern silicon components akin to Omega's Speedmaster evolutions.
**Material Metric (9.3/10.0)** - Grade 5 titanium case with exceptional brushing, ceramic bezel, and AR-coated sapphire rivals the premium build of Grand Seiko Spring Drive models.
**Dials & Design Metric (9.2/10.0)** - The vibrant sunray blue dial with applied markers and superlume offers superb legibility and modern flair comparable to the Rolex Daytona "Paul Newman" in visual impact.
**Brand Metric (9.0/10.0)** - Zenith's luxury status with deep heritage in chronographs places it firmly alongside Omega and IWC in prestige and craftsmanship.
**Functions Metric (9.0/10.0)** - Comprehensive timekeeping with central chronograph, subdial counters, and date window provides robust utility matching high-end TAG Heuer Carreras.
**Complications Metric (8.8/10.0)** - The flyback-capable chronograph with 1/10th-second readout impresses but falls just short of tourbillon-level complexity found in A. Lange pieces.
**Versatility Metric (8.7/10.0)** - Suited for daily sporty wear to semi-formal outings on its rubber strap, it echoes the adaptability of a Tudor Black Bay but with more bling.
**Rarity Metric (8.0/10.0)** - Boutique exclusivity and $11,900 price point offer solid scarcity similar to limited Oris divers, though not ultra-rare like sub-100 piece editions.

## Total Performance Score (TPS): 5.6

## WM Collector Grade: B+

## Performance Insights: Excels in movement, materials, and history with standout complications value, delivering strong performance relative to its $10,500 secondary market price versus an implied $18,900 fair value.
## TPS Interpretation: Good Value: The watch overdelivers on high-beat innovation and cohesive design for its accessible luxury pricing.
