Picked Up a New Watch Today. Let Me Know What You Think

About a year or so ago I posted my collection and asked for advice on a chronograph. I’ve spent the past year or so considering various chronographs (Zenith, Breitling, etc.), but I kept coming back to the Speedmaster. At the same time, I didn’t want to add a Speedmaster as my fourth watch. My collection was fairly cookie cutter luxury watch, and the Speedy was another in that vain. Besides, I travel often, and am much more likely to use a GMT function than a chronograph. So, I started looking for GMTs and stumbled across the Grand Seiko Shosho. I immediately knew it was the watch, and I bought it online the next day without ever seeing it in person. It arrived today, and pictures do not do it justice. I am in love with this watch.

I’ll still likely add a chronograph next, and probably a Speedy (though perhaps the new white dial?). But I’m going to take a good bit before getting a new watch and enjoy this collection as is.

I plan to largely wear the Shosho on blue leather, though the bracelet isn’t bothering me as much as some reviews would indicate. It feels solid and I’ll likely use it often as well.

Let me know what you think of my collection and what else you think I should consider. I’ve also got a Day Date on my list, but that’s designated as a 40th birthday present for myself in a few years.

A.I. Collection Review:
# 4 Watch Collection - Rolex (50%) / Grand Seiko (25%) / Cartier (25%) Review by A.I. WatchMetrics ## Collection Summary This upscale collection blends iconic Rolex tool watches with Grand Seiko's innovative Spring Drive GMT and Cartier's refined dress elegance, emphasizing luxury sports and travel versatility for a discerning collector who values heritage, precision, and daily wearability across professional and adventurous settings. **"Rolex-Anchored Luxury Quartet"** ## Overall Collection Rating: 7.9/10.0 **Brand Metric (8.5/10.0)** - Anchored by Rolex alongside Grand Seiko and Cartier, this lineup matches the prestige of curated high-end collections from established enthusiasts. **History & Innovation Metric (8.4/10.0)** - Iconic Rolex contributions combined with Grand Seiko's Spring Drive advancements rival the heritage depth of seasoned luxury assortments. **Rarity Metric (7.1/10.0)** - Secondary market prices averaging around $7,700 place it above mid-tier sets but below ultra-limited editions like Patek Philippe specials. **Material Metric (8.7/10.0)** - Titanium excellence from Grand Seiko plus Rolex's ceramic and gold accents deliver finishing on par with premium Omega or IWC ensembles. **Movement Metric (8.9/10.0)** - Rolex 3235/3135 reliability meets Grand Seiko's unique Spring Drive, surpassing typical Tudor or Oris collection diversity. **Complications Metric (4.2/10.0)** - Basic date and GMT functions fall short of complication-rich sets featuring chronographs or moonphases like those with Zenith or Breitling. **Functions Metric (8.0/10.0)** - Strong timekeeping, date, GMT, and dive capabilities align with versatile tool collections from Blancpain or Panerai. **Dials & Design Metric (8.6/10.0)** - Zaratsu polishing, glossy ceramics, and guilloche dials evoke the refined aesthetics of Audemars Piguet or Vacheron Constantin groupings. **Versatility Metric (8.3/10.0)** - Covers dive, dress, travel, and classic needs comparably to balanced lineups from TAG Heuer or Nomos enthusiasts. **Cohesiveness Metric (8.2/10.0)** - Rolex dominance creates tight luxury cohesion similar to focused brand-heavy collections from Rolex-only or Omega purists. ## Total Performance Score (TPS): 4.0 ## TPS Interpretation: Average Value: The collection matches expected performance for its combined secondary market pricing, offering reliable luxury without standout overdelivery. ## WM Collector Grade: B ## Performance Insights: Excels in brand prestige, materials, and movements while lagging in complications; provides solid value slightly above implied pricing for a Rolex-centric luxury set. ## Collection Type by Style - Sports/Tool (50%): Rolex Submariner Date 41, Rolex Datejust 16233 - Travel (25%): Grand Seiko Shosho SBGJ249 - Dress/Formal (25%): Cartier Ronde Solo XL Automatic ## Collection Type by Movement - Automatic Mechanical (75%): Cartier Ronde Solo XL (1847 MC), Rolex Submariner Date 41 (3235), Rolex Datejust 16233 (3135) - Spring Drive Hybrid (25%): Grand Seiko Shosho SBGJ249 (9R66) ## Collection Strengths - Dominant Rolex pieces deliver timeless appeal, superior resale value, and proven durability for everyday and adventure use. - Grand Seiko's Spring Drive introduces cutting-edge accuracy and gliding seconds, elevating technical intrigue. - Cartier adds sophisticated round-case elegance, rounding out formal versatility missing in many tool-heavy collections. - Overall premium finishing and water resistance support broad wearability from office to ocean. ## Ideas for Improvement 1. Incorporate a chronograph like a Rolex Daytona to boost complication depth and racing/sporting utility. 2. Add a leather-strap vintage or independent watch for enhanced historical breadth and customization options. 3. Diversify with a high-complication piece such as a world timer to amplify travel functionality beyond the single GMT. ## Downsizing Advice This tight four-watch rotation covers sports, classic, travel, and dress needs effectively with high synergy from the Rolex core, so retain all unless prioritizing liquidity—the Cartier could be the lowest-use candidate for sale if formal occasions are rare, as the Datejust handles semi-formal duties adequately, potentially funding a complication upgrade without weakening the lineup. ## Watch by Watch Summary **Grand Seiko Shosho SBGJ249**: Innovative titanium Spring Drive GMT shines with 72-hour reserve, Zaratsu polishing, and 200m resistance for superior travel precision. **Cartier Ronde Solo XL Automatic**: Elegant 40mm steel dress watch offers refined guilloche dial and slim profile for understated luxury in professional settings. **Rolex Submariner Date 41**: Benchmark 41mm dive icon excels with ceramic bezel, 70-hour power reserve, and 300m capability for unmatched tool reliability. **Rolex Datejust 16233 Champagne**: Classic 36mm two-tone with champagne dial and fluted bezel provides versatile everyday charm and strong heritage value. **A.I.
