Collector Description

My small but cherished four watch collection. Probably way too much justification for why I have these, but it’s why I’m here. Roast if you’d like; could be fun 🤷🏼‍♂️

Timex Weekender Chronograph: This one was my foray into watches. Several years ago I started a retail job where I needed a watch to be able to check the time (there was a strict no phone policy), so I found something cheap that looked nice. I still think the Weekender has one of the most timeless, elegantly simple designs to date. 2) Filson Mackinaw Field Watch (made by Shinola): I know that Shinola doesn’t get a lot of love around here, and I absolutely agree that they’re an overpriced experiment in marketing, but this has to be one of the most attractive watches I’ve seen that, specifically in this cream/bronze build, bridges the gap between rugged and classy. I ultimately made the purchase only because I found this one for about half the original MSRP from Filson directly, and because as a Detroiter it felt like I was supporting a local business. 3) Hamilton Khaki Aviation Pilot Day Date Auto: This one holds a special, spiteful place in my heart. I purchased this one after a failed engagement. We’d been engaged for about a year and a half, but at the time of our engagement I was in a big transitional period of my life and strapped for cash. I proposed with a very modest but beautiful vintage diamond ring from my grandmother with plans to purchase a “better” ring in the future when funds allowed it. When the time came we designed a custom ring together and waited about a month for its arrival. A week after we received the new ring my fiancée left me saying that she no longer loved me. I received a partial refund and promptly bought this watch for myself. I’d been wanting a decent automatic for a while and this one caught my eye. 4) TACS Automatic Vintage Lens II: This one is my least worn but also my most treasured. With a 52mm case length and 15.5mm case thickness this thing is an absolute unit, especially on my lean wrist. Its Miyota movement is nothing special but I think the design process that went into his watch is amazing. The attention to detail is impeccable, the camera aesthetic is very unique and eye-catching without being too over the top, and the fit and finish is a delight to behold. The sheer amount of material utilized and the satisfying weight it amounts to in your hand is enough value to make this one a steal at its price point. As an artist I fell in love with this watch as soon as I stumbled across it online. My girlfriend at the time knew I’d been eyeing it, so when I proposed she got this for me as an engagement gift, complete with customized engraving. I wore it on my wedding day, and going on a year and a half of healthy, loving marriage, I wear it whenever we find a special occasion to celebrate us.

Note: I like brown leather straps

A.I. Collection Review:
# 4 Watch Collection - Timex (25%) / Shinola (25%) / Hamilton (25%) / TACS (25%) Review by A.I. WatchMetrics ## Collection Summary This eclectic quartet emphasizes practical tool watches with field, pilot, and vintage influences, blending budget quartz reliability from Timex and Shinola with automatic craftsmanship from Hamilton and TACS, ideal for the value-driven enthusiast who prioritizes versatile daily drivers over high-end flash. **"Budget Tool Watch Quartet"** ## Overall Collection Rating: 5.6/10.0 **Brand Metric (4.9/10.0)** - A mix of entry-level stalwart Timex and reliable mid-tiers like Hamilton averages out to solid but unremarkable prestige, akin to a Seiko 5 collection. **History & Innovation Metric (5.3/10.0)** - Hamilton's aviation legacy provides a boost, but the younger brands and derivative designs keep it near median levels like a typical Tissot lineup. **Rarity Metric (3.0/10.0)** - With mass-produced Timex and modest production elsewhere, rarity lags behind even a standard Citizen Promaster set. **Material Metric (7.2/10.0)** - Stainless steel cases paired with sapphire and mineral crystals across the board deliver above-average durability and finishing for the price, surpassing many budget Hamiltons. **Movement Metric (5.8/10.0)** - Quartz chronos and basic automatics like Miyota 9015 average out to reliable mediocrity, matching a Hamilton Khaki Field. **Complications Metric (4.5/10.0)** - The Timex chronograph adds some utility, but overall simplicity trails a mid-tier Omega Seamaster. **Functions Metric (5.8/10.0)** - Day-date and chrono features provide everyday utility on par with a standard Tissot PRX. **Dials & Design Metric (6.5/10.0)** - Vintage lenses, pilot markings, and field motifs create engaging, wearable aesthetics better than average Casio fare. **Versatility Metric (7.2/10.0)** - Covering casual chronos to rugged pilots, this set handles office-to-trail transitions more adeptly than a single-style Tudor collection. **Cohesiveness Metric (6.5/10.0)** - A shared tool watch ethos ties field and aviation pieces together cohesively, though diverse sizes prevent perfect harmony like a matched Oris squad. ## Total Performance Score (TPS): 4.0 ## TPS Interpretation: Fair Value: Punching above its weight in materials and versatility while delivering expected reliability at around $500 average per watch. ## WM Collector Grade: C ## Performance Insights: Standout materials, design, and versatility compensate for low rarity and complications, yielding solid bang-for-buck against the implied $480 price point. ## Collection Type by Style **Field/Adventure: 2 watches** (Shinola Filson Mackinaw, TACS Vintage Lens II) **Pilot: 1 watch** (Hamilton Aviation Pilot Day Date) **Sports/Chronograph: 1 watch** (Timex Weekender Chronograph) ## Collection Type by Movement **Quartz: 2 watches** (Timex, Shinola) **Automatic: 2 watches** (Hamilton, TACS) ## Collection Strengths - Excellent material quality and finishing relative to price, with sapphire crystals elevating daily wearability. - Balanced movement variety offering quartz accuracy alongside automatic charm for different occasions. - High versatility for an entry-level set, spanning casual to rugged use without major gaps. ## Ideas for Improvement 1. Incorporate a GMT or world timer to enhance travel functionality and broaden appeal. 2. Add a higher-end automatic diver for deeper water resistance and complication depth. 3. Introduce a slim dress watch to balance the heavy tool-watch skew and improve formal versatility. ## Downsizing Advice At four watches, this is a lean starter collection; if trimming to three, prioritize the Hamilton for its superior movement and heritage while selling the Timex—its chrono fun is redundant with the set's casual coverage, freeing up $40 without losing core utility. ## Watch by Watch Summary - **Timex Weekender Chronograph**: Playful budget quartz chrono with sunburst dial perfect for weekend errands. - **Shinola Filson Mackinaw Field Quartz**: Rugged canvas-strapped field watch channeling outdoorsy Americana reliability. - **Hamilton Aviation Pilot Day Date "Interstellar"**: Robust automatic pilot with day-date complication, evoking cinematic aviation heritage. - **TACS Automatic Vintage Lens II**: Charming microbrand auto with magnifying vintage crystal, blending retro field style and solid specs. **A.I.
